They are getting payback for years of allowing violence in Democrat-run cities across the country with not so much as a handslap on many of the rioters while police were repeatedly thrown to the wolves.
If they had shot some of those who were engaged in launching IED's and throwing molotovs at police and they occupied properties they were protecting, people would understand the difference between a peaceful protest and mob behavior.
