Freedom of Expression, whether it is speech, printed words or electronic messages is essential for a democracy.
Censorship that prevents persons saying or writing whatever they want should be very limited. The two examples that come to mind are "yelling fire in a crowded theater" and "publishing the departure time and schedule for troop movements".
Otherwise let anyone say whatever they choose and let their listeners evaluate and judge whether what's said, printed or published is good, bad or indifferent; whether or not it should be considered or discarded with the garbage.
Yes, following such a policy will result in a lot of misinformation and trash coming into the public realm. The alternative, prior restraint, is the first step toward the loss of individual freedom and democratic ideals. Protecting that freedom and those ideals is paramount and doing so by allowing virtually uncontrolled and unrestrained speech by anyone, anytime, anywhere is the first and essential step in doing so.
Let people hear it, read it and consider whether it has merit or not.
