For the record, it made no difference to me if it was built or not. I was alright with building it.
1) it does provide around 7,000 temporary season union jobs. Most of those were under 8 month contracts.
2) it really isn’t needed from an oil perspective. In recent years, there’s been a bottleneck in the oil supply, BUT, expansions to existing pipelines is expected to fix that. Some oil experts believe the XL Keystone Pipeline was going to be running half empty.
3) permanent jobs past 2022? 50, some of which would end up being in Canada.
4) a lot of the oil was simply getting piped from Canada to the Gulf Coast, refined, and exported to Asian markets
5) the writing is on the wall for in the long term. Alberta had to send significant public funding to jumpstart the project because private investors wouldn’t get onboard.
Again, i really don’t care either way, but it doesn’t seem like the pipeline was a good idea in the long term. Honestly, I don’t understand why it’s that controversial either way.
