I was curious to learn more about Steve Wilks and found this 18 minute video of his introductory press conference with the Cleveland Browns as their Defensive Coordinator. I think it provides some insights into his thinking about handling a defense and fitting in on an new staff.
A few takeaways:
- He's very articulate and to the point with his comments
- Comes across as low key but authentic - I think players will like that
- Some former NFL head coaches probably have too big of egos to fit back in effectively as a college defensive coordinator; his ego seems in check so I don't that will be a problem with him
- He focused (in the NFL) on pass defense but talked about importance of stopping the run: said you need guys who can pass rush and guys who can cover well; need negative plays on 1st or 2nd down to allow "getting more exotic" on third down
- He claimed to be an analytics guy who adapts to the opponent each week
- He was very diplomatic with his comments; don't think he will be one to create any controversy with media comments while at MU
- He had good comments on fitting in with a staff and working with others
It was just one glimpse of his thinking and personality, but I get the feeling that Coach Drinkwitz made a very good hire!
