As for fairness, I find it amusing all the sudden you concern yourself with that.

Co-ed teams have existed for a very very long time. The idea of separating them out by gender was a construct.

As to the EO, pretty clear there, it involves federal funding. If a group of folks want to form a sports team or organization that is private and doesn't involve federal funding they are free to separate their competitors in the way that they see fit, mostly.
