On that day, the Republican Party had a chance to redeem itself, to reclaim its soul from darkness and return it to light. President Trump had tried to coerce a foreign government into investigating his main political rival on phony charges. The Senate Republicans knew that. They knew that Trump was wholly unfit for office, and that he had abused the power of his office.
Had they removed Trump from office, Mike Pence would be preparing to be inaugurated on Wednesday, and the Biden Harris team would be a fading memory. President Pence would have saved thousands of lives of COVID victims. President Pence would have led the nation peacefully through the civil unrest of the summer. And President Pence would have restored to the Office of the Presidency the honor and dignity it once held, but may never hold again.
But except for the courageous Mitt Romney, all the Republican Senators failed the test. They took what they thought was the pragmatic and easy way out. And our country will pay a terrible price for many, many years to come. Fifty-one Republicans voted against removing our unfit President from office. History will judge them very, very harshly.
