Its because people won't vote for an unknown, no matter how qualified they are, because they say "he don't have any chance to win".
IOW, the average voter is a blithering ****ing idiot, to stupid to tie his shoes, much less vote.
For proof, note the number of Libertarians - so often the most qualified of all candidates - who get elected. Its very close to zero.
