which limits the sanctions for impeachment to removal from office AND a potential ban from holding future office. There are no time limits established otherwise and criminal liability is not precluded. There appears to be nothing to preclude an impeachment trial after the fact. If it were limited to removal, then one could say that it is moot, but the additional possible penalty may provide enough of a basis for allowing the proceedings to continue to resolution.
