He was diving off the coast of South Africa in a kelp forest and just happened upon her and started observing her. She eventually got used to him and started coming to him from time to time.
He follows her around and learns a ton about the kelp forest ecology and her specifically. He talks about how it helped form a connection to the environment around him and led to developing a stronger bond with his son who would dive with him from time to time.
