and questioning it is just a waste of time. There are now lots of good private entities that can go there and get that data. Most of them sell that data, while releasing some of it through various press releases and conferences, which really is not covered by the media.
I am in agriculture, and this happens all the time there. Everyone laughs at the government numbers, but there are some great analysts that can sift through all of the data and re-construct a reasonable estimate of what the government data should be. The problem is that the data is usually out of date by the time it is constructed, so the real time data is always "wrong" to some extent.
The one good thing about US government data (in general) is that it is very methodical...the data collection and analyses is quite transparent. Is it perfect....not at all...but it has at least a solid foundation.
