they took a proactive approach to black-on-black crime, drugs and other issues facing their communities. IMHO, there's been a serious leadership void ever since Dr. King was assassinated. Instead, black youth are left to look up to rappers, athletes and drug dealers, many of whom are not what you would call pillars of society.
In addition, maybe it's time to quit throwing money at a failed education system and come up with some real answers. Until black kids in the big cities (and elsewhere) receive teaching that's equal to or better than their while counterparts, they'll never be able to compete in our society. Like the old United Negro College Fund ad campaign used to say, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."
