Treason is an example of why government is a cult.

It is an archaic holdover from our monarchical roots when, because kings were considered to be ordained by their deity, betrayal of the State was tantamount to betrayal of God.

Then, as the US won its independence from England through an act of treason against the crown, treason against the newly-formed state was seen as a very personal betrayal of the “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” pledged to one another by the men who built the fledgling country. Today, the criminalization of treason is simply a means of defending and keeping power.

A government does not deserve loyalty of an individual solely on the basis of a person being born within its borders. The United States was founded on acts of treason. The Declaration of Independence calls it the duty of the people to commit treason against government that claims illegitimate power.

"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security."
