I have recently been tracking the top Missouri high school football recruits over recent years over on the Football Board. With all the discussion about Cuonzo’s lack of success attracting Missouri kids, I thought I would transition to basketball. The 2016 class was very thin and extremely top-heavy, and included one generational talent. Mind you, this class was just prior to KA’s final season, so we never had any real legitimate chance at any of the top four players. The top ten Missouri high school kids from the class of ‘16 per Rivals:

1. Jayson Tatum 6-8 SF St. Louis (Chaminade)

Five-star McDonald’s All-American was ranked #3 nationally and chose Duke over Arizona, Florida, UConn and Illinois. Averaged 16.8 ppg. and 7.3 rpg as a true freshman and then declared for the 2017 NBA Draft. Selected #3 overall by Boston, he earned 1st team NBA All-Rookie honors with 13.9 ppg and 5.0 rpg. Has become a mainstay for the Celtics and was named an NBA All-Star and third team All-NBA last year. Signed a six-year $172 million contract prior to this season and is currently averaging 26.3 ppg and 7.6 rpg through eight games. A potential Hall-of-Famer depending how his career progresses.

2. Tyler Cook 6-8 PF St. Louis (Chaminade)

Tatum’s high school running mate was a four star recruit, #74 player nationally. Signed with Iowa and was a significant contributor for three seasons. Named to Big-10 All-Freshman team after averaging 12.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg, then followed up with 15.3 ppg and 6.8 rpg as a sophomore. Withdrew his name from the NBA draft prior to his junior season, returned to the Hawkeyes and earned second team All-conference honors with 14.5 ppg and 7.6 rpg. Declared again for the 2019 NBA draft but was not selected. Spent last season bouncing around between the Nuggets and Cavaliers organizations, playing primarily in the G-League. Appeared in 13 NBA games with minimal numbers. Signed with the Timberwolves prior to this season but failed to make team.

3. Xavier Sneed 6-6 PF Florissant (Hazelwood Central)

Four-star, #93 recruit overall, signed with K-State over Illinois, Cincinnati and Creighton. Served as the Wildcats’ sixth-man as a true freshman, then emerged as a three year starter. Averaged 12 ppg and 5 rpg combined over those seasons, and was named Honorable Mention All Big-12 his senior year (14.2 ppg and 4.8 rpg.). Undrafted in the 2019 draft, he signed a two-way contract with the Hornets and appeared in three NBA games, playing primarily with the Greensboro Swarm of the G-League. Waived prior to the current season. Both he and Tyler Cook are expected to return to the G-League this season, which has been delayed by Covid.

4. Jeriah Horne 6-6 PF Kansas City (Barstow)

Three-star recruit signed with Nebraska over Clemson and DePaul. Averaged 4.3 ppg and 1.6 rpg off the bench for the Huskers as a true freshman then transferred to Tulsa. After a redshirt transfer season, he started at power forward for the Hurricane for two seasons, averaging a combined 11 ppg and 5 rpg. Left for Colorado as a grad transfer prior to this season and is averaging 10.7 ppg and 5.8 rpg for the Buffaloes through ten games.

5. K.J. Robinson 5-10 PG Blue Springs (South)

Three-star recruit inked with Omaha. Played sparingly as a freshman, then became a full-time starter at the point for the Mavericks his next three seasons. Named Honorable Mention All-Summit League following his senior season (15.2 ppg and 3.3 apg.). Has signed to play for Horsens IC in Denmark for the upcoming season.

6. Blake Spellman 6-0 PG Lee’s Summit H.S.

Ball-handling wizard was considered a likely Top-100 player and was compared to a “young Pete Maravich” very early in his high school career. Didn’t develop as hoped and was a three-star recruit as a senior and committed to Northern Kentucky. Played sparingly for the Norse over the first 11 games of his freshman season before leaving the team at semester break with “personal issues.” Enrolled at Division II Central Missouri for his sophomore season and averaged 7.4 ppg and 3.2 apg. Was averaging 10.2 ppg and 3.4 apg for the Mules through 16 games as a junior before abruptly leaving the team. After a year away from basketball, he appeared this season for NAIA Mid-America Nazarene in Kansas, and was contributing 11.3 ppg and 4.5 apg through 11 games, before their season as suspended due to Covid.

7. Zeke Moore 6-6 SF St. Louis (Riverview Gardens)

Two-star recruit signed with St. Louis over Drake and Eastern Illinois. Posted 5.6 ppg and 2.0 rpg as a freshman for the Billikens then announced he was transferring to Tennessee Tech. Declared academically ineligible, he instead enrolled at Southwest Illinois JC and sat out a season as a redshirt. Committed to Tulsa prior to the 18-19 season and played sparingly during the first semester, before leaving the team and transferring to SIU-Edwarsdville. Granted a waiver by the NCAA, he was immediately eligible for the Cougars last year and became a starter (12.6 ppg and 3.6 rpg.). Opted to forego his final year of eligibility and has signed to play for Nissan Pardingas in a lower level Spanish league for the upcoming season.

8. Shea Rush 6-6 SF Kansas City (Barstow)

Two-star recruit is possibly the most interesting story in this review. Born when his legendary washout father Jaron Rush was in high school, he overcame a potentially difficult childhood, primarily with the support and mentoring from his uncle Kareem. Offered by a variety of Ivy League schools out of high school, he enrolled at North Carolina as a preferred walk-on. Spent four seasons with the Tar Heels, appearing in 71 games and scoring 36 points before graduating with honors. Currently a financial advisor for Merrill-Lynch in Chicago.

9. Mike Lewis 6-1 SG St. Louis (Chaminade)

Man, Chaminade was loaded during the 15-16 season. Two-star recruit picked Duquesne over Central Michigan and East Tennessee St. Started immediately as a freshman, earning Atlantic-10 All-Freshman honors with 14.1 ppg and 2.3 rpg. Posted 14.4 ppg and 2.3 rpg as a sophomore. Playing time diminished his junior season and he averaged just 5.6 ppg before leaving the Dukes at the semester break. Transferred to St. Louis but left the Billikens and transferred again to Nevada, where he sat out last season. Left Nevada prior to the current season and has signed to play for Pesci Pecs in Hungary.

10. Dezmond McDaniel 5-11 PG Kansas City (Bishop O’Hara)

Unrated recruit signed with Oral Roberts and played extremely limited minutes as a freshman. Left ORU and enrolled at Bossier Parish CC in Louisiana where he averaged 15 ppg as a sophomore. Spent his final two seasons as a part-time starter for Division II Maryville in St. Louis.
