from any standpoint. For all practical purposes, they are coal powered vehicles in most places in the US. The rare earths needed to produce batteries is the electric vehicle industry's dirty little secret. Enormous amounts of land need to be mined for relative little material. Plus, for most of us, they are not all that practical.

That said, oil as a fuel will not be practical forever. It will outlast me but probably not my children. Compressed NG would be a better alternative in the US. Still a fossil fuel but far less carbon footprint than gasoline and far more sustainable in terms of the availability of fuel. Developing a decent public transportation system in US cities would be better yet.
