Collected from the inside of kerosene lamps. It is the finest powdery residue and gets on everything.
The only thing I've ever seen as bad was the carbon dust from the elevator control room at American Century Towers. We came down from inspecting some radio equipment there and walked down one flight to the executive office level where Mr. Stowers had his office. The carpet in the hallway was white.
Oops.
Next time we went, they had shoe covers to wear and then dispose of before leaving the stairwell.
