a certain age. Until that time, they were vulnerable to the diseases. With some of those, they may have been 5 or 6 years old before they were fully protected.

So your child were at risk up until that point. If during that period an unvaccinated person had been carrying the disease and your child were exposed, then it would have had a very substantial impact on your child.

Also, a certain percentage of the population can't be vaccinated due to immune disorders or other medical issues, or may have temporarily lost their immunity due to cancer treatment or other things. Our vaccinations protect them by keeping us from being vectors of the disease.
