The process in CA is a simultaneous vote for recall and electing a new governor in case the recall succeeds.
When Grey Davis was recalled, the field of candidates to replace him was fat with Dems and only a couple of Republicans. As a result of the split votes by Dems, Arnold ended up winning by 17 pts.
