That makes perfect sense, because Jefferson Davis probably is the only man you will ever see or know of who almost begged to be tried for treason. No one wanted the legality of secession tried in court and most certainly didn't want the acts of the federal government disclosed in open court, as they would have in such a trial. Davis knew it all, in both the run up to the war and what happened during it.

It had nothing to do with "reconciliation". It had a lot to do with keeping things quiet.
