Goodman Manufacturing had a manufacturing plant in Fayetteville, TN. They were looking to expand and identified the fairgrounds as a location for expansion. They offered to purchase the land, and the aldermen and mayor said no, because they wanted to limit town growth and expansion.

Goodman found another parcel of land and offered to purchase it as a new location for the fairgrounds and they would simply deed it to the city. The aldermen and mayor again said no. Goodman eventually packed up and moved to Texas, leaving 2,400 people without a job.

Around this time Publix supermarkets was going to open a grocery in Fayetteville; however, since Goodman had moved leaving 2,400 people without a job, they pulled out, since the area and employed population was no longer economically feasible.
