tradition; life began with the first breath. Early Christian theologians also held that ensoulment occurs when an newborn baby takes its first breath of air. They cite, among other passages, Genesis 2:7, which reads: "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. And in the Catholic tradition until 1854, abortion was not wrong until after the "quickening," around 16 weeks. And until around the late 70's early 1980's, most Protestants were in favor or neutral on abortion until the after 16 weeks or in case of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother. Even the Southern Baptists convention hailed Roe v. Wade as a good decision for society because they believed at the time, life truly began with the first breath; the SBC reversed its earlier stance on abortion in 1979. Life beginning at conception is a new definition for many Christians over the last 40 years.
