they aren't about preventing the spread of disease, although there's probably something to their effectiveness (i.e., it's plausible).

What masks are about is a perception of control. Not the government controlling US, but giving people *something* they can do, within their control.

Bottom line: masks are about keeping people from freaking the **** out.
