promoted it. Nor would I be surprised if they had some of their news crew participate. Nor if they had offered hats etc. to people as part of some advertising, promotion type of thing.

Do you think that Falun Gong owns the Epoch Times? From news stories that I have seen it is a relatively new religious group that started growing rapidly in communist China and then has been brutally suppressed, like virtually every other religious group in China.
I wouldn't expect them to be some wealthy organization & I doubt it was started by some charismatic guy who is milking it for tons of money, though I'm willing to listen to evidence that shows that.
What ties are there to the Epoch Times? Is there some wealthy individual who happens to be a member of Falun Gong who has donated a lot of money to them? Or are they so wealthy that they started their own major news outlet?
Their news don't seem to be a big propaganda arm for Falun Gong from what I have seen. They cover a very broad range of topics including Christian persecutions.
They do obviously have some sources in China and have been able to get much footage of disasters in China. They have also been able to get tons of information, including government documents from China, reports from whistleblowers in the medical community and government from there as well.
I consider those Chinese sources to be a major benefit for them, not something to indicate one should never view or read anything on their site. Much of their information, especially on China is exceptional and not available anywhere else. They are also not controlled by the MSM and are not afraid to air things that powerful people in our country and in others around the world do not want to get out. That too is a major bonus for checking their site for news you can't get elsewhere.
The fact that they don't cower to the powers that be is a big reason that they are attacked so vociferously by the MSM. Hopefully you take that into account when reading hit pieces about them.
