called for a recount because they felt it was possible more of the Gore voters were confused by the system than Bush voters and they wanted to discern the "intent" of the voters over things like hanging chads and "dimpled chads" where maybe they didn't push hard enough to pop the chads out such that the card could be read.
The US Supreme Court said that the Florida court had exceeded it's authority, usurping the authority of the Florida legislature in changing the election rules.
The situation in 2020 is indeed different. In this case election officials themselves violated the election laws as set up by the legislature. On the other hand the Pennsylvania Supreme Court exceeded its authority in changing the election rules and was warned by at least one Supreme Court justice not to do so, but they did it anyway... and there are numerous other irregularities and computer problems that had been known and warned about before the election.
There are far more reasons to invalidate the results and have a full audited recount in the 6 contested states.
