Use him as a positive example, I weigh the totality of his life. So yes, Jefferson owned hundreds of slaves, and raped one of them repeatedly starting when she was 15, but the greatness of his accomplishments outweigh that terrible flaw.
Many great men have succumbed to certain temptations at times in their lives. Washington owned slaves. Eisenhower had a mistress in Europe. GW Bush was a drunk. ML King had insatiable sexual desires. But they all achieved great things, displayed heroism in times of trial, and on balance are people whom we should emulate. John McCain is one of these men.
But then there are some who are so recklessly immoral, so thoroughly debauched, that their immorality defines who they are and outweighs everything else. JFK comes to mind, as does LBJ. Evil, wickedly immoral men.
And beneath them all sits Donald Trump, who banged a porn star while his wife was nursing their newborn son, who boasted about assaulting women by grabbing them by their pussy, who stated that avoiding venereal disease in the 60’s was his own personal Vietnam. He, and his admirers, are the bottom of the moral heap.
