Earlier this week, we reviewed the Missouri high school basketball recruiting prospects from 2019 and 2018. Today we move on to the class of 2017. The 2019 class was very weak and the 2018 class was ridiculously strong. The class of 2017 was thin and far from flashy but did include some “diamonds in the rough.” Keep in mind, the Porter brothers would have been included in this class but had moved to Seattle.
1. Jared Ridder 6-6 SF Springfield (Kickapoo)
Recruited by Kim Anderson during his high school career, he spurned Mizzou following the coaching change and signed with Xavier as a three-star recruit, number 146 player in the country. Left Xavier just prior to the start of his freshman season and transferred to Missouri State. Became eligible for the Bears for the second semester of the 18-19 season and posted numbers of 5.1 ppg and 1.3 rpg. off the bench. Played six minutes during the first game of the season last year before injuring his shoulder and undergoing surgery.
2. Levi Stockard 6-8 PF St. Louis (Vashon)
Raw big man, three-star prospect signed with Kansas State (they seem determined to get at least one player every year out of St. Louis.). Played limited minutes off the bench for the Wildcats during his three seasons: 1.8 ppg and 1.7 rpg as a freshman; 1.8 ppg and 1.5 rpg as a sophomore; and 3.7 ppg and 1.6 rpg as a junior (started 10 games). Left K-State and has transferred to VCU.
3. Elijah Childs 6-7 PF Lee’s Summit (West)
Undersized power forward emerged during his senior high school season, became a three-star recruit and committed to Bradley, Became a starter immediately for the Braves and averaged 8.4 ppg and 6.2 rpg as a freshman, garnering MVC All-Freshman honors. Was named All-MVC third team as a sophomore with 12.4 ppg and 7.2 rpg; then All-MVC second team as a junior with 14.8 ppg and 8.7 rpg numbers.
4. Brandon McKissic 6-1 SG St. Louis (University)
Three-star recruit signed with UMKC and has had a decent career for the Kangaroos. Averaged 7.9 ppg and 2.8 rpg as a freshman and 10.5 ppg and 3.2 rpg as a sophomore. Moved into the point guard position as a junior and posted numbers of 11.0 ppg and 3.0 apg.
5. Ryan Stipanovich 6-7 PF St. Louis (DeSmet)
Yes, if you recognize the last name, this is Stipo’s nephew. Three-star recruit signed with Bradley (what’s the deal with Bradley?). Averaged 2.4 ppg and 1.5 rpg during his freshman season then decided to quit basketball and enroll at Mizzou and be a regular college student. Most recent claim to fame is when he somehow managed to throw a whiskey bottle from the upper level of the Brookfield Apartments clear across the street and thorough a window of the Missouri United Methodist Church in downtown Columbia. Expelled. Whereabouts unknown.
6. Jacob Gilyard 5-9 PG Kansas City (Barstow) MO
Emerged as a three-star recruit during his senior year in high school and committed to Richmond. An Immediate starter for the Spiders, he averaged 11.4 ppg and 4.1 apg as a freshman and was in the top ten in steals in the NCAA, earning third team all Atlantic-10.
Progressed to 16.2 ppg and 5.2 apg as as sophomore and was named second team All-Atlantic Ten. Posted numbers of 12.7 ppg. 5.7 apg and was number three in the nation in steals per game as a junior and was a first team All A-10 selection. Declared for 2020 NBA Draft but has withdrawn and will return for senior season.
7. Hayden Kovel 6-11 C Branson (Link Year Prep)
Originally from Texas, Kovel spent a prep season at the Link Year Prep school in Branson, a newly opened religious academy associated with the Kanakuk Kamps organization. He develped into a two-star recruit, and signed with Cenral Arkansas, where he became the starting center during his freshman year and contributed 8.7 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Numbers increased to 12.5 ppg and 6.3 rpg as a sophomore and 12.2 ppg and 7.6 rpg as a junior. Transferred to UNC-Greensboro for his senior campaign.
8. Cameron Davis 6-0 PG Springfield (Kickapoo)
Unrated recruit chose to attend the Naval Academy. Averaged 5.2 ppg and 0.7 apg as a freshman and 9.8 ppg and 1.7 apg as a sophomore. Flourished as a junior with numbers of 16.4 ppg and 1.7 apg, earning 2nd Team All-Patriot honors for the Midshipmen.
9. Wyatt Yess 6-8 PF Ballwin (Parkway Central)
Unrated recruit chose Yale, where he has played sparingly over the last three years, his best season being his junior year when he averaged 2.6 ppg. And 2.9 rpg.
10. Nobody. The Rivals database included only nine Missouri players in the 2017 class.
