tied itself to socialism
Pelosi’s “majority makers” should remember she views them as just that: majority makers. Centrist Democrats were not brought in to show how the Democratic Party views itself but to give Pelosi control of the House. This is what they signed up for, and the results should shock nobody.

Centrist House Democrats complained during a private conference call that Republicans had an easy time labeling them as far-left socialists, leading to GOP gains in the House. It is unclear what exactly they expected, given that the Democratic Party has been pursuing this image for the last two years.
Ever since Bernie Sanders gave Hillary Clinton a fight in the 2016 presidential primary, the party has had to play to what it thought was a burgeoning socialist base. Watching Joe Biden easily dispatch Sanders in the 2020 primary proves that it was the fact that Clinton was an awful candidate, but nevertheless, the Democratic Party accepted its leftward lurch.
Democrats propped up outspoken socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from the moment she scored her 2018 upset win in the Democratic primary against Rep. Joe Crowley. Before she was even elected to her seat, Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez called her the future of the party. Her congressional clique got its own nickname in the media, and Pelosi posed with her and Ilhan Omar on magazine covers.
“The Squad” has been the recipient of fawning coverage from the Democratic Party’s allies in the media. Ocasio-Cortez is more celebrity than legislator. Her legislative calling card is the Green New Deal, a promise so destructive that Biden distanced himself from it during the debates and every Democrat in the Senate refused to put his or her vote on the record for it.
Xochitl Torres Small and Kendra Horn knew that the left-wing position on energy would hurt them. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell and Donna Shalala were obviously going to be at a disadvantage being associated with socialism in heavily Cuban American districts. But the Democratic Party made its choice, and those five relinquished their seats to Republicans, along with others.
Democrats aren’t just going to pivot to a more centrist direction now either. Biden was the “moderate” in the 2020 Democratic primary, but his platform was even more progressive than Barack Obama’s and Clinton’s. Kamala Harris, who is poised to become the vice president, is one of the Senate’s most liberal members and pandered heavily to the left-wing of the party during her own presidential run.
Pelosi’s “majority makers” should remember she views them as just that: majority makers. Centrist Democrats were not brought in to show how the Democratic Party views itself but to give Pelosi control of the House. This is what they signed up for, and the results should shock nobody.
