Following up on last night’s review of the top Missouri high school recruits of the class of 2019, tonight we look at the class of 2018. Whereas the 2019 class was extremely weak, the 2018 class was arguably one of the best classes in Missouri history top to bottom (at least according to the recruiting experts.).
1. Courtney Ramey 6-3 SG Webster Groves H.S.
A major Mizzou target, the four star combo guard was the #42 player in the country, and committed to Texas. He broke into the Longhorns’ starting lineup midway through his freshman season and finished the year averaging 8.1 ppg, 3.3 rpg and 3.1 apg, converting 39% from the three-point line. As a sophomore, his long-range shooting fell off to 31% but he finished with numbers of 10.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 2.9 apg. Considered declaring for the 2020 NBA Draft after being rated a top 50 draft prospect but will return to Texas for his junior season.
2. Carte’are Gordon 6-8 PF Webster Groves H.S.
Ramey’s inigmatic teammate on Webster Groves’ back to back state championship teams was a four star recruit and the #68 player in the country. He was considered a major recruiting coup for Travis Ford when he signed with St. Louis U. but lasted only 13 games with the Billikens, averaging 8.9 ppg and 4.1 rpg before abruptly quitting the team and transferring to DePaul. He never suited up for the Blue Demons, opting instead to enroll at JuCo powerhouse Northwest Florida St. He posted numbers of 9.2 ppg and 6.5 rpg for the Raiders in 11 games before abruptly quitting that team as well. He is currently enrolled at Grambling State for his junior season.
3. Torrence Watson 6-4 SG. St. Louis (Whitfield)
The four-star, #111 rated recruit in the country signed with Mizzou. He came on strong late during his freshman season, often leading the Tigers in scoring, and finished with numbers of 7.1 ppg and 1.5 rpg. His three-point shooting plummeted from 36% to 28% during his sophomore season, when he averaged only 4.6 ppg and 1.3 rpg.
4. Christian Bishop 6-8 PF Lee’s Summit (West)
Four-star, #114 player in the country signed with Creighton. He averaged 4.1 ppg and 2.1 rpg off the bench his freshman season then broke into the starting lineup as a sophomore, posting numbers of 8.6 ppg and 5.3 rpg. Considered a borderline NBA prospect because of his defense and rebounding.
5. Jericole Hellems 6-6 SF St. Louis (Chaminade)
Four-star, #130 player nationally, signed with N.C. State. Has been a solid contributor as sixth man for the Wolfpack, averaging 5.3 ppg and 2.5 rpg as a freshman and 9.5 ppg and 3.4 rpg as a sophomore. Has been mentioned as a potential “breakout star” in the ACC this season (assuming there is a season.)
6. Jordan Lathon 6-4 SF Grandview H.S.
Yet another four-star recruit, #137 player nationally, surprised many by committing to UTEP. An immediate starter for the Miners as an undersized small forward, he contributed 10.9 ppg and 5.0 rpg as a freshman, twice being named Conference USA freshman of the week. His numbers plummeted to 5.0 ppg and 4.6 rpg as a sophomore. He left UTEP mid-season and entered the transfer portal, only to return to the team two weeks later and played somewhat sparingly thereafter. Left UTEP following the season and has transferred to Milwaukee.
7. Ochai Agbaji 6-4 SG Kansas City (Oak Park)
Unheralded recruit soared instantly to a three-star, #145 in the county recruit after signing with kansas, and has more than lived up to the billing. Slated to redshirt his freshman season, he was thrust into action in January when injuries and recruiting cheating investigations benched several players. Became a solid contributor for the jayhawks during the last 22 games of the season with 8.5 ppg and 4.6 rpg. As a sophomore starter he posted 10.0 ppg and 4.2 rpg and was an honorable mention All Big-12 performer.
8. Fred Thatch 6-2 SG Sikeston (H.S.)
Three-star guard signed with St. Louis U. A solid contributor off the bench, he scored 4.3 ppg and 2.7 rpg as a freshman. Posted similar numbers over the first six games of his sophomore year before a “mysterious illness” sidelined him. Will likely be granted a medical redshirt if his health allows him to return to basketball.
9. Yor Anei 6-10 C Lee’s Summit (West)
Raw big-man with potential was a three-star recruit who signed with Oklahoma St. Broke into the starting lineup early in his freshman season. 7.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg and 2.7 blocked shots per game (top 10 in the country) earned him All Big-12 defensive team. As a sophomore, he averaged 8.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg and 1.9 blocks. Transferred to SMU following sophomore season.
10. Shaun Williams 6-2 PG Florissant (Hazelwood Central)
Three-star recruit inked with Kansas State. Played sparingly as a freshman and averaged 1.4 ppg and 0.6 apg. Suspended for the first five games of his sophomore season, he served as a backup point guard and averaged 3.6 ppg and 1.2 apg. Left K-State and has transferred to CS-Bakersfield.
For those interested, the list drops off fairly precipitously from here. The #12 player was Cameron VanLeer (Cullen’s brother), who plays golf for Coumbia College and intends to join the basketball team this season.
