My wife's friend married a dude from there, cool guy but he tells me its liberal compared to the "big" ME countries.

In reality if it wasn't for the Islamic revolution in Iran, the folks in that country are natural allies to the US. It was a liberal, secular place before the revolution sent them 5 steps backs.
