Given the way college basketball scheduling works and the amount of D1 teams, its very difficult for a real program to go sub .500 on an entire season.
Excluding this current 6 year disaster from the Kim Anderson cratering its happened 3 times total for MU since 1980. One disastrous Norm season in 1996-97 when we went 16-17, and the last two years of the Quin Snyder era that were so bad our coach quit in the middle of the season.
A bad year is anything less than 18 or 19 wins. Its a disaster to go anywhere near .500 if you are an actual serious D1 program. This last 6 year period is a gross anomaly and we should not let that reframe expectations. I agree with your premise that 2021-22 looks like a big step back season. But not to the point of being sub .500, no real program should have the expectation of falling to that kind of level.
