I don't disagree that testing is driving the hysteria here, but hysteria is not what the OP article or this thread is about.

The one statistic that I've placed some trust in is all cause excess mortality. Western nations have seen a higher increase in all cause excess mortality this year than developing nations in Africa.

It's because Western nations have a large population of really old and really fat people.
