There's absolutely nothing incompatible with Trump waving the flag and increasing spending for the military and simultaneously making the alleged comments. He said very similar things about McCain on the record; disparaging his service record.

From a man who sees the world as a collection of winners and losers (regardless of the nature and circumstances of losing), the comments are compatible and would not really be a surprise if true.
