I remember one of my first years teaching when one of my best students approached me and asked if I could reschedule a quiz for her. When I asked why she explained that she was part of a student group that was planning a walkout and other teachers were working with them. I told her I would not reschedule and that she would receive a zero if she was unexcused. I also told her she had to do what she felt was right, what do your convictions mean if you only follow them when it is easy for you? She explained that she had to walk out but she took her zero without complaint and proceeded to work her àss off the rest of the semester to regain her A. I don't believe I have ever been more proud of a student than I was if her for that. The truly amazing thing, her mother who was very active in the school never called about my treatment of her daughter.
