First of all, college basketball still mattered back then. Secondly, MU still mattered in college basketball back then. Our students still went to the games, and the campus and locals in Columbia still supported the program. We still recruited at a national level and Hansbrough would have been surrounded by other very good college players. Our coach had a top 10 national salary and highest in the conference. We had just built a new basketball arena. It was definitely a different time.
Hansbrough was the national freshman of the year. He was first team All Conference 4 times. He was a 3 time consensus All American. He was the National Player of the Year. He avged > 20 ppg over a 4 year career and is among the top 15 career scorers in college basketball history with 2,872 points.
Its impossible that in a single season MPj could have had anywhere close to the same level of impact. Even the single greatest season in college basketball history would pale in comparison.
