... he was quite crafty, and he was aggressive as a blocker. As I recall, his teammates intimated that he was almost pathologically mean in practice ... yet he almost never had offensive PI called on him.

A combination of lack of inherent athleticism (neither fast in a straight line nor quick in change of direction) compounded by foot injuries (both feet) did him in as a pro. He still had the best hands ever.
