You have to realize that most of the colonists thought the entire thing was the craziest endeavor they'd ever heard of and sought to stay out of it entirely.

Then after a near PowerBall-caliber win revisionist history raged.

History books inflate:

1. The number of colonists that fought on the side of the revolution.

2. The number of torys that fought with the brits.

As the increase in both numbers makes for greater drama and heroism.
