The old west had it right when a mob came to the jail to take and lynch a prisoner.
The marshal didn't have to shoot all of those who came to take the prisoner. He only had to guarantee to shoot the ringleader.
Thompson would be the first one I'd shoot. And I would make sure he understood that.
