to use to solve different types of problems. Common Core focuses more on math literacy than processes.
At its heart math is about patterns. If you understand those patterns then math comes easy to you, if not you struggle. The old school methods of teaching did not really focus in those patterns, but the 'gifted' math students picked up on them on their own. CC is about teaching kids to look for those patterns and use them.
A simple example, most people are unaware that division is just repeated subtraction. I taught my daughter how to divide a couple of years before she started kindergarten. She loved using the counting bears and one day I got tired of just counting red bears and blue bears and just asked her 'how many groups of four bears can you make?'. Just like that a three year old was doing division.
Math does not have to be difficult but we make it so for a majority of the kids.
