storage regulations in the U.S. were updated making it extremely difficult to store bulk quantities of Ammonium Nitrate fertilizer. For decades AN was a key nitrogen fertilizer for cereal grain, pasture and hay crops. The technology was pioneered by Midwest Research Institute of Kansas City, Missouri. I can still get Ammonium Nitrate, but it has to be immediately applied. Few fertilizer plants are capable of meeting regulatory requirements to store it. Other AN explosions in the U.S. I recall were the Texas City, Texas fertilizer plant and the Sur-gro fertilizer plant in Falls City, Nebraska.
