the mistake was sorted out and everyone went back to their lives. How would them fighting the cops have resulted in a better outcome for them?

Cops make mistakes just like everyone else but if you are respectful, and yes compliant, those mistakes can all be corrected as this one was. If you fight the cops or run from them you may force a mistake that cannot be corrected.
