St Louis has a bigger problem that most of us first thought.
The crime fighting scene has gotten so bad that now several State Lawmakers from St Charles are stepping in to help embattled St Louis City Police Officers in their on going struggle with St Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner's Office.
Legislation is being worked on that would let St Louis Police turn to the Missouri Attorney General with criminal cases the Circuit Attorney won't take.
A huge problem is Kim Gardner's Office is turning down a lot a cases police try to get charges issued on, meaning there are more suspected violent criminals walking the streets.
Of the 7045 charges requested by police the Circuit Attorney's Office just took action on 1,641 of them.
One of those cases is one we all remember, the shooting death of 7 year old Xavier Usanga.
He was shot to death in the back yard of his North St Louis home.
A suspect confessed to the shooting. Police went to Kim Gardner's Officer for charges but were turned down.
Luckily he was picked for an unrelated Federal case.
The Feds used the suspect's confession to convince a judge to keep him locked up on the Federal charges.
Kim Gardner's Office said she had insufficient evidence for her office to charge him despite the confession and I would presume other evidence supplied by police.
So the killer of the 7 year old boy is still free of murder charges even though somebody confessed to the killing.
Other prosecutors have been jumping through hoops to try and get dangerous criminals off the streets of St Louis .
U S Attorney Jeff Jensen's Office got an extra $900,000 to hire more federal prosecutors to handle city cases.
Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt sent 5 of his assistant prosecutors to the US Attorney's Office to be sworn in as Assistant US Attorney's to help handle city criminal cases.
All that has at least giving police a place to go for charges. Maybe they can't get murder charges from the Feds, but the gun charges are better than nothing.]
St Louisians really should give a big vote of thanks to US Attorney, and the Missouri AG's Office for trying to help make the streets safer.
Also the Federal Marshals, and FBI, and ATF are pitching in making sweeps to get the bad guys off the streets. And the men and women of the St Louis Police Department are doing their part as well.
The last federally led raid netted 162 violent criminals. Because it's federal it won't have to go thru Kim Gardner's Office it goes through the US Attorney.
It really is unbelievable that we have to jump thru all these hoops to get the criminals off the streets because the difficulty law enforcement is having getting Gardner to issue charges in more cases.
The real losers are the people living in the high crime areas who are in virtual war zones. More of them are seeing their children and other loved ones gunned down by criminals who are getting bolder.
I get criticize often for my take on Kim Gardner's performance. One person even said I didn't like African American women.
Well that's a uninformed thing to say considering all my work on the homicide issues talking to many a Black woman about loved ones including children being murdered. And add to that all my work with the homeless, putting many Black and White Mothers and children in hotels to help them get out of the cold.
. But that criticism is okay. I have a thick hide.
But here's a news flash.
I don't base my criticism on race, or gender, or national origin, or religion, or sexual orientation.
I base it on the job Officials and politicians are doing for the taxpayers which is who I'm committed too
St Louis had a dozen more murders in 2019 than in 2018. The picture is getting worse not better.
If this were a football team and the Elected leaders were the coaches they would have all be fired .
If this were the military they would have all be relieved of duty.
Don't expect me to keep quiet when so many people are suffering including Black women losing their kids to murder and shootings..
All of the 14 children murdered in St Louis last year were Black.
I believe what most Black woman and Black men as well as women and men of every race want more than anything is justice for their children or other loved ones.
They want the crime ridden streets in some of the worse neighborhoods made safer from the cold, heartless, criminals who are forcing many families to duck for cover in their own homes because there is so much gunfire.. It's causing Senior Citizens to live like virtual prisoners in their own houses afraid to come outside at night. .
I don't really think most residents care about the welfare of a six figure politician whose not getting the job done.
