questions:
1. What has he done since the 1960s? Was he a great statesman?
2. He is a black man representing one of the blackest districts in the country and maybe the safest D seat in all of congress. Was he a great politician?
3. What does "conscience of the congress" mean? Sounds like a title you'd give to someone who doesn't do anything but really cares and who used to be important.
My recollection of him is not very good but not really bad either. He comes across to me as another mush mouthed liberal gadfly doing ceremonial stuff and symbolic stuff but nothing of any great consequence.
He seems to fit the role of a behind the scenes king maker who also has a job in the house of reprehensibles.
I am open to being better educated by others on the board.
He served 30+ years in congress largely living off his reputation from the 1960s. Any great speeches? Any important legislation with his name on it? After getting beaten up on the pettus bridge, did he do anything worth remembering? Or did he just keep a very safe seat warm?
And you gotta love the washington post describing him as, "fiercely a partisan democrat ....but also fiercely independent."
