under different scenarios. Generally PPE is used to protect oneself, and that is where most of the studies have been conducted. There is not a lot of research on protecting others, because isolation/avoidance is the generally accepted procedure.
Asian (or at least in some countries) culture shows to wear a basic mask when you are sick. I am not aware of studies that show effectiveness of that.
I always laughed at that a bit, except the one time I was in a rush hour Tokyo train and then you hear someone coughing.
