What works. Your point about Saban is spot on. Before his first National championship as a coach his teams would lose 2-3 games a year.
Pinkel had a blueprint for success at Missouri. Recruit a highly rated QB and execute a vertical game. He and his coaches were confidant in their talent evaluations so they looked at less recruited players, looking for that diamond in the rough and more often than not found them. Used superior QB play to offset recruiting disadvantages.
Odom to his credit attempted to follow the same blueprint for success, but was unable to sustain or execute the same level of success. Too many mistakes, too many mis evaluations, too many injuries, not enough depth. Unfortunately the SEC is unforgiving to rookie coaches.
Drink has a blue print for success. His blueprint is predicated after Auburn’s blueprint for succes and you can see the execution of that blueprint already in recruiting. Some one here very succinctly pointed out Drink isn’t trying to out recruit the big boys’, but recruit with them. To do this he is recruiting those areas once again that have historically provided Missouri football with success.
Like all things this is a process that is slowly unfolding, but I truly believe Missouri has at long last found a coach to elevate and bring sustained success to a program that many believe is a sleeping giant only needing the right leadership and vision to bring the program to a level everyone can be proud of.
The blueprint for success always works better than winging it as you go approach.—oz
