a few more weeks is to have a few more weeks of data and trends, which seems to make sense. They are waiting until the last possible moment to make their decision on fall sports.
I don’t think it’s going to make a difference, since the data and trends are pretty awful in many parts of the country, including, in particular, the SEC states.
In my mind it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that the SEC, at the end of the month, will join the B1G and PAC 12 (and by that time probably the other two P5 conferences), in going to conference only schedules for the fall sports. If you want to salvage any part of the seasons for football, VB, soccer etc it’s the only way to go. At least then you have some assurance that all the games will be against teams that the SEC can control critical safety features on. You can’t do that when playing teams out of conference.
And while its foolhardy to predict very far in the future the effects of the virus, I’m pretty certain that whatever framework the conferences come up at the start of the fall sports will be disrupted to some degree as the abbreviated seasons play out, with a likely consequence being that post season play will be altered in some way.
For VB, for instance, it could mean a smaller field that makes the NCAA tourney, and a smaller group of regional sites. I think it’s real unlikely you will see a 64 team field for VB and 16 four team regionals across the country for the first two rounds.
