Sports never united anyone, it teaches players to overlook differences and fans to not view players as real humans outside of the sport they play. No different than when Jim Brown, Bill Russell, and Jabbar came together to support Ali, fans hated that and said sports would never be the same. Sometimes culture shifts are bigger than things that go on inside a society and sports are only a reflection of that.

Yes, the pandering to woke culture has been over the top and disingenuous in an attempt to avoid cancel culture, but the cultural shift in the treatment of people is real, no different than the 60s.
