to hone a philosophy and then view each issue through the lens of that philosophy without exception.

When it comes to science (even the some of the social sciences), that is where I think one needs to read and understand competing theories and results. That's not something that one can really decipher through a political philosophy alone.

When it comes to history, then all information is good information especially original sources. So it's great when scholars/writers discover and compile those original sources.
