Amazon delivery may be lost

Ordered a new American flag, was scheduled to arrive yesterday but didn’t. Now the status suddenly changed to “your package may be lost” with the message “sorry your delivery is late, although it may still arrive, you can request a refund”.

Is this just how they do it now? One day late and they start offering refunds?

Please explain why this message is being reported.
