The aftermath included a Mississippi that did not reach the level of their 1860 GDP until 1902. There were similar economic outcomes of the same disastrous proportions all over the country.
He definitely needed to cleanse his soul.
However, I don't believe for a single minute he went to church everyday. In fact, there is plenty of history to be able to state he didn't believe much in organized religion at all.
