and I am fine with using public spaces for that protest, and the police to try to keep both the protesters in line and protect them as they move.

The police also have an obligation to protect private property, and they failed to do so..for a myriad of reasons.

I think the evidence is gaining that the real destruction was done by outsiders using the protests as cover. Was some looting done by the protesters that got caught up in everything..sure...but as you look back, things were actually quite well planned...and burning the size buildings they burned in the time they burned certainly showed some expertise as well.
