and about 15 minutes before the cops started using tear gas, the KCMO police captain said that they weren't going to necessarily enforce the curfew against the hundreds of remaining protesters because they weren't really posing any problems and everything was generally peaceful.

Why not apply that mentality to things like expired tags, broken taillights, minor traffic offenses, opening your business in spite of shutdown orders, drug possession or sales, etc.? It seems like the police could avoid the vast majority of conflict, and the response to such conflict, if they only looked at violent, victim-based crimes.

When is the law the law and when is it the law not the law?
